The Bahamas and China

The Bahamas and China

The Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the People's Republic of China officially established diplomatic relations on 23 May 1997 with the signing of a Joint Communique by their respective Representatives to the United Nations in New York. The establishment of relations between The Bahamas and China signalled a shift in policy of the Government of The Bahamas to recognize the "One China" policy.

In 1999, Dr. Arthur Foulkes was appointed as the first non- resident Ambassador to The People’s Republic of China. A few years later in 2006, the Embassy of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas was established in Beijing to assist in furthering relations between both countries. The first resident Ambassador to China was Her Excellency Ms. Elma Campbell. The presence of official representation of The Bahamas in China has done much to advance relations, as well as provide important services to Bahamians and foreign nationals in the Asia/Pacific region.

This year marks the 26th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the People’s Republic of China. Since establishing relations, the ties between The Bahamas and China have grown stronger, as we work toward shared goals such as global security and stability, the social and economic development of our peoples, and continued cooperation that respects the sovereignty and right to self- determination of all nations.
