The Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the People’s Republic of China officially established diplomatic relations on 23 May 1997 with the signing of a Joint Communique by their respective Representatives to the United Nations in New York. The establishment of relations between The Bahamas and China signalled a shift in policy of the Government of The Bahamas to recognising the “One China” policy.

In 15 years since establishing relations, the ties between The Bahamas and China have grown stronger, as we work toward shared goals such as global security and stability, the social and economic development of our peoples and continued mutual co-operation that respects the sovereignty and right to self-determination of all nations.
