3rd Kashgar Central & South Asia Commodity Fair

July 2, 2007 On Wednesday, 27th June, 2007, the Bahamas Head of Mission, Mr. Philip Miller, joined a group of diplomats that travelled to Kashgar, the western-most city in China, in Xinjiang Province, to attend the Third Kashgar Central & South Asia Commodity Fair that ran until Sunday, 1st July. Mr. Miller with a local in Kashgar. The group of diplomats met with municipal and provincial officials and were given a comprehensive overview of the economic and social life of Kashgar, in particular, and Xinjiang, in general, inhabited largely by the Uyghur ethnic minority. Kashgar and the neighbouring counties are mainly agricultural areas, but are attempting to develop a hospitality industry based around history, culture and ecology. At the end of the tour, Mr. Miller remarked that, "For many of the diplomats, who were from developing small states, the tour of Xinjiang was instructive by highlighting the value of education in poverty alleviation, the positive aspects of environmental conservation and the importance of economic diversification".
