The Bahamas is known for its stellar beaches. With over 2,000 breath-taking islands and cays, and the clearest water on Earth, it’s no wonder visitors come from all around to sink their toes into miles of pure white, and in some places pink, sand. With calm, turquoise waters and soft, powdery sand, it’s no surprise when our beaches are recognized as some of the best in the world! In short, the beaches you’ll find here are the very definition of paradise.

<Diving

The Bahamas offers an array of dive experiences like no other destination in the world. You’ll find sunken Spanish galleons, inland blue holes, underwater caves and forest-like coral reefs teeming with vibrant marine life. You can even feed and swim with reef sharks—an experience sure to get your adrenaline pumping. While some visitors choose to simply loll around with a snorkel in the shallows - and they still come out grinning euphorically, most can’t resist the opportunity to pull on some scuba gear to go deeper and rub shoulders with the sharks, dolphins and rays that are found all around the more than 700 islands and cays.

If you’re in The Bahamas diving from late January to early February, don’t miss huge shoals of magisterial groupers as they spawn around Andros, Long Island, Cat Island and the Berry Islands; in November - you’ll witness the jaw dropping ‘March of the Lobsters’ as they swarm like cavalry across the sandy sea beds of the Little Bahama Bank.

<Ecotourism

The Bahamas has 25 national parks and conservation areas, all under the care of The Bahamas National Trust. These wildlife havens range in size from the 743 square km Inagua National Park which is the nesting area of the Abaco Parrot and the breeding grounds of the West Indian Flamingo, down to the eleven-acre Retreat gardens in Nassau - home of the largest private collection of palms in the Western Hemisphere. The Bahamas is home to some of the most intriguing, exotic and mysterious natural phenomena on the planet.

Here you'll find the world's deepest blue hole, the third-largest barrier reef in the world, miles of pink-sand beaches, the world's largest colony of pink flamingos, the endangered Bahama Parrot, the unusual Andros iguana, a wild horse preserve and countless nature preserves. You'll also find a growing number of eco-friendly hotels and resorts in The Bahamas offering vacation packages that support ecotourism and ecotravelers.

Along with the Inagua National Park, the Exuma Land and Sea Park is unique because of its 455 square km of outstanding anchorages and stunning underwater environment, which attracts sailors, kayakers and divers to its protected waters and uninhabited islands. The mangrove swamps, sand dunes, wide beaches, limestone caves, and pine and palm forests of the Lucayan National Park on Grand Bahama also make for a memorable day trip.

<Fishing

The ocean is home to some big predators, including Marlin, Tuna and Sharks. For fishermen, there is no greater challenge than putting yourself against one of these fish that can outweigh the average human by five times or more. The Bahamas is known for its big game fishing. Record catches are set each year as fishermen from around the world cast their reels for the ultimate prize.

Celebrities such as Michael Keaton, Laurence Fishburne and author John Grisham are fans of our Bahamas fishing and have frequented our fabulous fishing areas since time immemorial. Author Ernest Hemingway lived on Bimini for several seasons in the 1930s, drawn by the incredible fishing available in the Gulf Stream - that legendary “river” of warm water that rushes north past The Bahamas. Fishing is ever-popular around the islands, with authors, celebrities, and everyone in between!
